Holiday Elves are Here

Cary, NC The elves have been busy late at night at Garden Supply Company, decorating the holiday trees for Christmas and turning the Greenhouse into a winter wonderland. It is looking absolutely magical in here.  Every year, I never cease to be amazed at the ideas and creativity these talented little helpers dream up. You have got to come take a look! We have beautiful trees in every style and theme imaginable, from fun and whimsical to elegant to everything in between.

This stunning jewel-toned tree is a real eye-catcher. I love the natural elements of the floral picks mixed with the touches of glitter and gold. And aren't those peacock feathers a unique and special addition?

The layered ribbons are another beautiful feature. Many of these ribbons are available for purchase by the yard. Just ask the elves at the front counter for help.

For a natural, outdoor look, how about this beautiful woodland tree?

Snowy and tawny owls mingle with rustic elements like pine cones, hemp ribbon and bird nests on this organic beauty.

These are just a few of the spectacular tree displays the elves have whipped up in the garden center. We'll be showcasing them all at our annual Holiday Open House, scheduled for the first weekend in November. But in the mean time, pop in and see what we've been up to. There is new holiday decor showing up daily that you won't want to miss.

Thanks for stopping by! We'll see you back here soon for more snippets from the garden.

Off to Market

Good evening everyone and happy Saturday to you!  I hope you all are having a marvelous weekend so far. If you have ventured over here in the past couple of weeks, you probably couldn't miss the state of flux and chaos in the store. Since we had to move everything around to replace the plastic on the roof, Deb decided it was a good time to move LOTS around! We are gearing up for Fall and making room for all the new gifts and decor coming in.  And on that note, Deb and gang went off to the Atlanta Market this morning! I can't wait to see what's new and trendy not only for now, but the Spring season as well. I will fill you in when they get back next week.....and start expecting new products to arrive by the end of the month. And in the mean time, come beat the heat with a little summer sale on all our indoor and outdoor water fountains and features.  When it's this hot outside, sometime just the sound of running water will help keep things cool. If you have considered adding a fountain or pond to your landscape, this is a great time. From now, until the end of the month, ALL fountains and pond-building supplies are 20% OFF. We have a wide array of fountains from "table-top" styles to grand statements. We offer delivery and installation of fountains as well as design and installation of ponds and waterfalls.

I also want to remind everyone that there are still some great deals to be had on remaining clearance items in the Greenhouse. All sale stickers are marked at least 50% off...pink tag items are 70% off.

All Tyler Candle products are 70% markdown.  And there are plenty of remaining sale goodies on our sidewalk sale carts marked at 70% off.

June Endings

Hello everyone and happy Wednesday!  Can you all believe that it's mid-week already?  And that we are about to start a new month? I don't know where the time manages to go, but I sure wish I could slow things down a bit. I want this summer to last! And speaking of summer, we've still got some hot summer deals going on down at Garden Supply that I would love to share with you. Just in time for the 4th of July holiday right around the corner, our entire line of patriotic home and garden decor is on sale.  That's right!  Every item of home and garden decor in the greenhouse is now 20% off through Friday, July 2nd. Take a peek at some of the festive summer and holiday items we have available.

Whether you are planning a big party, having a BBQ with the neighbors, or spending a quiet day at home with the family, we have a ton of festive goodies to put you in the holiday spirit. Not only can you make a POW with a firecracker table display, simple red, white, and blue items can make a bold statement, as well. Pair a trio of red vases with a single white piece for a strong impact, like on our white bookcase here. Arrangements like these can last you throughout the summer and bring a touch of brightness to your home decor.

Look at how this arrangement of red, white, and blue items adds a holiday flair to this table display. Here's a peek at some of our other patriotic items, too.

Here's one of my favorite items in the Greenhouse right now.

It is time to celebrate, and we've got your holiday decorating needs covered.  Come check out these fabulous items and enjoy big savings on our entire line of home and garden decor.  Plus, we still have pink tagged items in the Greenhouse for 50% off!

And not only that, all trees and shrubs are currently 20% off, too! It's getting hotter out there, but this is still actually a good time to garden, as your plants will "root in" quicker.  Just be sure to water everything 1" per week.

Happy End of June, everyone!  Hope to see you soon down at Garden Supply!

Hot Summer Sale

Hello everyone and happy Saturday!  The temperatures are sure rising these days.  It has been one hot June, and we've got some hot summer deals to match down at Garden Supply that you will not want to miss. Stop by the garden center and enjoy 20% savings off all trees, shrubs, and home & garden decor. And in addition, for this weekend only, we have some extra special deals to throw into the mix. We have added Hydrangeas, (excluding "Limelight" variety), Rhododendrons, and Green-leaf Hypericums, Buy one, Get one free. Those shrubs are great in afternoon shade if you are lucky enough to have some!  Also, ALL perennials, mix and match, are on SALE. Choose 10 Perennials, get 20% off, choose 20 and get 30% off!

Believe or not, this still a great time of year to plant because plants "root in" quicker.  Our only caution is that if you are going out of town for more than 7 days, have a friend come by to water, as everything needs an inch a week.

The upcoming forecast shows some promise of relief from the heat, so come in this weekend while it's hot and the sales are even hotter! Hope to see you all soon down at Garden Supply!

Bloomers for Early June

Hi everyone and happy Friday to you all!  Another weekend has rolled around again and the grounds at Garden Supply are looking as beautiful as ever.  Late spring, early summer is blessing us with tons of beautiful blossoms at the garden center, and I am so excited to share with you some of my favorites of the week.

As you can see, the perennial and annual tables are absolutely bursting with color.  The roses are magnificent right now and the hydrangeas are out of this world.  Scroll down a post or two to see more details on those.  I also mentioned previously the early blooming crape myrtle, Zuni, which continues to wow down at the garden center.  Now joining the Zuni in full bloom are the Natchez and Tonto varieties of crape.

Natchez Crape Myrtle

The Natchez Crape Myrtle is a best seller, made popular by being a fast growing tree that blooms all summer long. It grows very rapidly at 3-5 feet a year and is tolerant of many climates. The pure white blooms explode in brilliance against the tree’s deep green leafy canopy from June through September.  A Natchez Crape Myrtle also gives you the unusual bark coloring of cinnamon on the trunk and stems, along with its smooth, sleek distinctive texture.

Tonto Crape Myrtle

The new Tonto Crape Myrtle gives you huge, dark pink blooms throughout the summer. This is the perfect tree if you want to add vibrant color to your lawn, but have limited yard space. This crape myrtle matures to 8-15 ft., making it the perfect tree to tuck away in tight areas. However, it will soon attract attention with its abundance of dark pink flowers that last from late spring to early fall.

Zuni Crape Myrtle

The Zuni tops out at about 12', making it the ideal choice for small yards and screening hedges. Blooming early summer through fall, Zuni features larger, dark lavender flower trusses, improved hardiness, and handsome peeling bark. Excellent fall foliage color from orange-red to maroon.

Another blooming tree that caught my eye this week is the stunning Southern Magnolia. Native to the southeastern United States, the magnolia is a large striking evergreen tree with large dark green leaves and large white fragrant flowers. Widely cultivated around the world, over a hundred cultivars have been bred and marketed commercially.  We are excited to offer several varieties at Garden Supply, including this 'Little Gem' magnolia.

Little Gem Magnolia

This cultivar of Southern Magnolia has a compact, upright growth habit more typical of a multi-stemmed shrub than a single-trunked tree. It grows at a slow rate to a height of perhaps 30 to 35 feet with an 8 to 12-foot spread. ‘Little Gem’ Southern Magnolia forms a dense, dark green oval or pyramidal shape, making it suited for screen or hedge planting.

The Southern Magnolia, Magnolia grandiflora is a medium to large evergreen tree which may grow 27.5 m (90 ft) tall. It typically has a single stem and a pyramidal shape. The leaves are dark green, stiff and leathery, and the large, showy, citronella-scented flowers are white, up to 30 cm (12 in) across and fragrant, with 6–12 petals with a waxy texture, emerging from the tips of twigs on mature trees in late spring. Flowering is followed by a rose-colored fruit.

We also offer the Dwarf Southern Magnolia, a heavy bloomer with white, 6-inch flowers appearing  in spring and again in summer. Its narrow, evergreen form is 20 to 25 feet high by 10 to 15 feet wide. Green leaves are rusty bronze underneath.

I wanted to share with you a fun new line of Americana home decor items just in to the Greenhouse. These adorable pieces are full of spirit and are just waiting to brighten your homes this summer season.

And don't forget our Gardener's for the Cure team, part of the 2010 NC Triangle Race for the Cure, being held June 12th.  If you have not joined the team yet, it is not too late.  We are getting close to our goal of raising $10,000, but we still have a little way to go.  Every penny goes to research for finding a cure for breast cancer, and we appreciate each and every pledge.  So much so, in fact, that we are offering a special 12% discount card for all your Garden Supply purchases for the rest of this year.  Register with us at the nursery, or online here. Help us in this fight against breast cancer.

Thanks so much for stopping by everyone!  Hope you have a wonderful weekend.  See you all down at Garden Supply.

As Mother's Day Approaches

Hello everyone!  Mother's Day is on May 9th this year.  If you're looking for that perfect gift for Mom, we are here to help.  We're staying open late today, until 8 pm to offer you a Stress-Free Shopping Evening.  Our personal shoppers will be on hand to help you select a gift Mom will love from our huge selection of gorgeous flowering plants to unique and special decor pieces.  And don't forget we also have gift certificates available and free gift wrapping as well. And as Mother's Day approaches, I would like to share with you a personal message from Garden Supply owner, Deborah Ramsey, that is near and dear to our hearts. Having lost her mother to breast cancer a few years ago, Deborah is dedicated to helping raise funds to find a cure for this devastating disease. To that end, she has spearheaded a special "Gardeners for the Cure" team to participate in this year's NC Triangle Race for the Cure.  I hope you will all join along with us, as together, we can truly make a difference.

And now a message from Deborah:

Many of you remember and participated in "Gardens for the Cure", a peek into some of our customers great gardens and an annual fundraiser for Komen for the Cure. This was a grass roots event Keith dreamed up to honor my Mom, co-workers, and customers who were battling breast cancer, to raise money, and more importantly awareness, about this disease. This event usually occurred around Mother's Day and as that weekend approaches, I'm reminded of her and everything the Garden Tour represented to us.

I lost a most valuable person, my Mom, to breast cancer a few years ago and while I didn't lose sight of the fight to continue working with our local affiliate of Komen for the Cure, I could no longer muster up the energy to host another Garden Tour. Quite honestly, it was too painful because she was so closely tied to the spirit driving this event.

For some, when you lose the person you are fighting for, it knocks the "fight" out of you. For others, it spurs them on. I have been treading water for awhile now but again, as Mother's Day approaches, I am reminded...because I still have a sister, a Dad who misses his wife, a brother longing for his Mom, a mother-in-law, a sister-in-law, a daughter, niece, friend, co-workers, and customers who are not yet immune to this disease.

My Mom would tell me when she would come in to wake up her morose teenager, "Debbie, you have a choice about your day, it can be a happy one or a sad one, but it's your choice." Needless to say, those words still ring in my ears each morning as I get up. I can choose to fight or flee, and I am choosing the fight in earnest once again.

I had the opportunity last week at a luncheon to raise money for our local NC Triangle Komen for the Cure affiliate, to hear Nancy Brinker speak again. A woman who 30 years ago made a promise to her dying sister to do everything she could to fight this disease, raise awareness among women, and end breast cancer. Talk about a grassroots movement... her, a few friends in her Dallas living room, and now one of the top-rated charitable organizations in the country. Komen for the Cure has funded over a billion and a half dollars to cutting-edge research.

She hasn't quit, I thought and neither should I. By now many of you may be thinking I am going to do the "Gardens for the Cure" again...not yet...baby steps. I want to be part of a well-oiled machine - The Race for the Cure - the largest foot race in NC and the single largest fundraising event Komen puts on each year. I want all of you to join our team "Gardener's for the Cure" because gardener's are passionate people.

I promise you a great team t-shirt, a fun after-the-race party and as an extra incentive, a 12% discount card you can use on the rest of your purchases this calendar year. It's my way of saying "thanks" for helping me get back into the fight to end breast cancer. Follow the link to our team page  http://nctriangle.info-komen.org/site/TR/RacefortheCure/DUR_NCTriangleAffiliate?team_id=133021&pg=team&fr_id=1702 if you can't be there on race day, you can "Sleep in for the Cure" and still get all the bennies.

My Mom who lived in Florida at the time, came to our race here once and I had the privilege to walk with her. Since I carry her each day in my heart, she has been in races since, and we still "walk together".

I hope you will join "us" this year and walk to honor your mom, grandmother, aunt, wife, sister, daughter, friend and co-worker.

I can't think of a better Mother's Day gift!

-Deborah

Thank you everyone!  Hope to see you soon at the garden center, and join me back here soon for more snippets from the garden.

Stress-Free Shopping Evening

Mother's Day is May 9th this year, only 5 short days from now.  If you're looking for that perfect gift for Mom, we are here to help.  We're going to extend our hours this Thursday, May 6th to offer you a stress-free shopping event.  Our personal shoppers will be on hand until 8 pm to help you find that perfect gift item.  With our huge selection of unique and beautiful decor pieces and flowering plants, you are sure to find just the perfect gift for Mom.  And don't forget that we offer gift certificates, too. Special free gift wrapping will be available. Here is a stunning flowering classic that is sure to capture Mom's heart.

From Monrovia gardens, this glorious Itoh Peony is reminiscent of grandma's cutting bed but without the fussiness sometimes associated with the plant.  Itoh Peonies are a cross of an herbaceous peony with a tree peony.  The cross combines the best traits of both parents: great vigor, large distinctive flowers, strong stems and long-lasting blooms. The sturdy flower stems of the Itoh Peony require no staking.  This variety, the 'Sequestered Sunshine' Itoh boasts large, bright canary-yellow blossoms with showy stamens.

Also available is this 'Cora Louise' Itoh which offers large, semi-double blossoms that are white with striking dark lavender central flares.  The flowers have a soft, pleasing scent.

Our third beautiful Itoh Peony is the 'Kopper Kettle' variety with copper-orange flowers that have a darker center and occasional yellow streaks.

I'm sure Mom would be pleased with one of these beauties!  And we have many more lovely options including a bounty of blooming annuals and perennials, fabulous container plantings all ready to go, beauty products from Tyler Company, and fabulous boutique items from the Greenhouse.  Stop by and let us help you make this Mother's Day one to remember!

Fresh Herbs

Good afternoon everyone!  For those of you interested in herb gardening, we have received several wonderful shipments of plants this last week.  Just about any herb you may be familiar with, and perhaps a few varieties you  haven't heard of, have made their way to Garden Supply

And although our last frost of the season is scheduled for April 15th, you can get started on your gardens now with just a bit of tender care.  Come talk to our friendly experts.  They are always on hand to answer all your questions.

You are going to love our herb variety.  We've got 4 types of thyme: Silveredged, Archer's Gold, Golden Lemon, and English. 4 types of sage: Common, Tricolor, Berggarten, and Pineapple.  Hidecote and Goodwin Creek lavender.  Parsley, catnip, mint, orange mint, spearmint, chives, and cilantro.

And don't forget the rosemary, or the Italian and Greek oregano. So many choices to be found here!

Another newcomer to the garden center this past week which I find absolutely charming are these fun strawberry baskets.

These adorable baskets can sit on your patio or deck table as is.  The plants will bloom and berry right in the basket, giving you an instant, edible centerpiece.  When the plant is done for the season, you can transplant them to your yard where they will happily return next year.

Those are just a few of the arrivals this past week.  As always at this time of year, new plants are showing up daily.  Hope you'll stop by the garden center and check us out.

And for news from the Greenhouse, we still have a few Easter decor items in stock, although hurry in....these little beauties are hopping out of here.

Be sure to stop by our Facebook page.  Upload your favorite Garden Supply photos and enter a random drawing to win two free tickets to the upcoming Chapel Hill Garden Tour on April 17-18th.  Show us your favorite plants you've planted from our garden center, your kids potting up their new tomato plants, or a shopping trip using our totes.  We'd love to see!  All photos uploaded between now and April 15th are eligible for the prize drawing.

Thanks so much for stopping by!  We'll see you back here soon!

Feed the Lawn & Kill the Weeds

Hello everyone!  Hope you are all having a wonderful weekend and are enjoying the burst of wonderful weather we've had to officially welcome in spring.  We've had a great time this weekend at Garden Supply as we wrapped up our big week-long Spring Garden Party yesterday.  Thank you to everyone who participated and to everyone who stopped by and helped make our annual party a huge success!  We couldn't have done it without you! Now that spring is truly here, it's time to turn your thoughts to a bit of yard prep and lawn care.  If you haven't yet done so, now is the time for fertilizing fescue grass.  Some lawn fertilizers contain pre-emergent crabgrass killers, which should go down within the next 10 days.  We recommend  you use Fertilome Crabgrass Preventer Plus Lawn Food.  Use Fertilome Classic Lawn Food if you have already applied crabgrass preventer.  We've got everything you need down at the garden center.

While over-seeding should wait until mid-September, you could work on seeding small, bare spots now.  This will require careful attention to watering in dry weeks, especially as we get into summer.

Cool weather weeds, especially chickweed, which blooms with a small white daisy, are gaining maturity now.  It's easy to get them by pulling the clumps by hand or by hoe.  It is blooming already, so it's a good time to get out as much as you can before the seeds go flying.  Come talk to our gardening experts for solutions.

With Easter being two weeks from today, now is the time to stop by the Greenhouse and check out our adorable holiday decor.  We have a huge selection of beautiful and unique items to spruce up your homes and decorate your tables for the season.

And look what else I discovered while strolling the Greenhouse yesterday afternoon.  A sale!  Always love a sale!

This lovely selection of pottery is now 30% off!  Just think of all the plant arrangements you could make for your decks and front porches with these.  Or thinking ahead, what wonderful Mother's Day presents these would make filled with flowering blossoms.

Thanks so much for stopping by!  We'll see you back here soon for more snippets from the garden!

The Countdown Begins

Good morning everyone!  Happy Monday!  Here's wishing you a great beginning to a new week.  And it's a very exciting week at Garden Supply.  Our annual Spring Garden Party begins in just 6 days, on Saturday  March 13th at 10 a.m.  Be sure and mark your calendars because you guys are not going to want to miss this!  We can't wait to see you there. And in the mean time, we have tons going on down at the garden center.  New plants are arriving daily and the Greenhouse is full to bursting with beautiful spring and Easter decor.  Take a look at this glorious shipment of Variegated Winter Daphne that has just come in.

This lovely plant is noted for its fragrance, which carries long distances and can often be smelled before you even see the plant in early spring.  The flower buds are purple and as they open will reveal an almost white center which is very beautiful.

It is an evergreen, so will keep its leaves year-round.  The leaves are decorative, as well, in dark green with white edges.  It is very dense and has a rounded form that will grow from 2 to 4 feet tall and about 2 to 4 feet wide.  This particular shrub is said to be one of the best of its kind.  With its smaller size it would work well around patios or in a small yard.  It is hardy to zones 6 to 9.  If you like fragrance, this would fit the bill!

If you're looking for a burst of color and greenery, we've got you covered.  The Greenhouse is filled with a wide array of flowers and plants that are sure to please.  We've got pansies, orchids, begonias, tulips, hyacinths, hydrangeas, cyclamens, ranunculus, and primroses in full bloom.  It is absolutely magical in here.

While you're in the Greenhouse, be sure to check out our collectible Penny McAllister figurines.  They are guaranteed to bring a spring smile to these last lingering days of winter.

Penny McAllister's whimsical and sweet collections bring new charm to folk art.  The sewing bug bit Penny at the tender age of 5.  Nearly 50 years later, the former elementary school librarian has woven her passion for folk art into a dream occupation, making paper mache creations full of wit and whimsy.

"The chip on my nose, the worn paint on my clothes...they're all supposed to be there! I was designed this way, lovingly aged" by Penny McAllister

As always, there is more to see and do at Garden Supply.  Stop by and pay us a visit!  We'd love to see you!  And be sure to check back here soon for more snippets from the garden.
