Join us on Saturday, February 14th from 10 am-11 am for our free class on how to start seeds indoors. This is the perfect time to get your seeds going indoors to give your garden a head start so you will be able to see the fruits of your labor more quickly. Flowers can spend more time blooming and fruit or vegetable plants can spend more time yielding crops rather than trying to reach maturity. Seeds are fairly inexpensive and it’s easy to get them established now so that when the weather warms up, your garden doesn't miss a beat! Our class will help you learn about the best products, the process of seed starting, and how and when to transplant the seeds to your garden.

Looking for a fun project? Maybe something a little different? Then come to our Terrarium Workshop and make your very own adorable indoor garden! On Thursday, January 29th from 6 to 7 pm, we’ll be leading the group in a hands-on workshop to learn the very cool art of making a terrarium. The cost is $20, which includes the stones, soil, activated charcoal, and moss. (Additional plants or add-ons will be extra.) Terrariums are an eye-catching way to instantly perk up a space. They look like their own little world which makes you take a closer look. They’re easy to make and can be made with a wide array of plant choices, so they can be as easy to care for as you want. Terrariums complement any décor and give an indoor area a fresh oxygen boost. They can also make great gifts and my favorite thing about terrariums is that my cats can’t get to the plants!

Attend our Terrarium Workshop for a much-needed break from the winter weather!

Join Gardeners for the Cure

Fourteen years ago I joined the "Race for the Cure" and began to work with our local affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation spear-headed by the generous Jeanne Peck, Katie Shaw, Carol Griffin, and countless other volunteers when my mother was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer.Frustrated I couldn't battle this disease for her, I went to battle by fundraising with my husband's idea of the "Gardens for the Cure"  It was a one day glimpse into some of the areas most beautiful gardens to raise awareness and money.  During those years we raised over a million dollars and shared many happy days with her.

Today my mom is not with me, but her spirit lives on in our team.  She not only fought for her own life, but also for her children, grandchildren, friends, and husbands, the 1 in 8 of us, so we would not hear the words "you have breast cancer".

The Susan G. Komen Foundation funds cutting edge research and puts the money where it was needed in our local communities. The principle of giving 25% of the money raised towards research grants nationally, and the other 75% staying locally to fund grants like mobile mammography for underserved women in our community is the reason I still support them.  Forget the politics and donate today...together we can bring a cure and make a world without breast cancer.

Hypertufa Workshops

hypertufa- container- Garden Supply Co

Create rustic, textured containers and cast concrete garden accessories in our new DIY Hypertufa Container Gardening and Concrete Leaves Workshops at Garden Supply Co. Join us and learn all about Hypertufa container gardening in this exciting new two-part workshop series. In class, you will create a DIY planter and decorative concrete garden art leaf that is "green" and environmentally friendly. Once you learn the process, you will be amazed at how easy and fun it is to make lightweight, stone-like containers from just three simple materials.

Hypertufa

Hypertufa was developed in the 1930s to replicate the stone troughs that were popular among English gardeners in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The lightweight stand-ins were not only easier to come by, but also easier to transport. Thanks to their porous nature, the pots were ideal for plants needing good drainage. Hypertufa containers are still practical in the garden and simple to create.

hypertufa- container2- Garden Supply Co

To make a pot, you'll need to fashion a mold from a pair of vessels -- the mixture is poured between them. In class, we'll  experiment with different objects and molds to create unique and personalized containers, created with you in mind. Because the medium captures subtle textures, baskets and leaves can be rendered in "stone," while clean-lined molds offer a sleek, modern look. Found objects, such as the broken china pieces seen here in our container, may be set while the medium is still wet. Hypertufa is not an exact science, which is part of the fun: Every pot has the potential to surprise.

Hypertufa and Concrete Leaves Workshops:

DIY Concrete Leaves Workshop:

Sunday, October 27th from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm
Fee: $25

In part one of our exciting two-part series, we will be creating large leaf art pieces that will add a decorative flair to your garden or home decor. Use these lightweight, durable designer pieces as accents in your borders or beds, tuck them into container gardens for a touch of whimsy, or display them as a table accent for your next party. Add texture, colorants, or your favorite mementos for a truly personalized touch. The choice is yours.

The $25 class fee for the Concrete Leaf includes light refreshments and materials. Now is a great time to find leaves like hostas, elephant ears, etc. before they disappear into dormancy. If you don't have a leaf from your garden we will have some to choose from.

Hypertufa Container Garden Workshop

The class fee of $30 for the Hypertufa Container includes refreshments and all materials. If you have mementos from your summer vacation like shells, glass, etc., you can bring those to incorporate into your creation.

Earth Day 2013

Earth-Day-2013

April 22nd, marks the 43rd anniversary of Earth Day, an annual effort to raise public awareness about the environment and inspire actions to clean it up. The global theme for Earth Day 2013 is "The Face of Climate Change", as we see global changes impacting real people, animals, and beloved places all over the world everyday. We at Garden Supply Co. believe that everyone can do something small but sustainable in their own lives to improve the planet’s health. To help you get started, here’s a few simple ideas of things you could do around your own home that can make a real difference.

Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs

Making a simple switch from incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescent bulbs will save energy and reduce the cost of your power bills. Compact fluorescents give the same amount of visible light, use less energy, and last longer than incandescent bulbs. And although the initial cost of compact fluorescents are higher, typical usage will save on average $40 in electricity costs over the lamp’s lifetime.

Plant a Tree

The simple act of planting a tree not only beautifies the landscape, it offers many environmental benefits as well. Trees improve our air quality by filtering harmful dust and pollutants such as ozone, carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide from the air we breathe. Trees also lessen the amount of storm water runoff, which reduces erosion and pollution in our waterways and may reduce the effects of flooding. And many species of wildlife depend on trees for habitat. Trees provide food, protection, and homes for many birds and mammals. Not only that, trees provide the oxygen that we need to breathe.

Organic Landcare

Each year, thousands of tons of harmful chemicals are dumped onto neighborhood lawns, and into our water systems from lawn care companies in an attempt to keep our grassways green and weed free, with varying degrees of success. In an effort to reduce chemical wastage and over-use, Garden Supply Co.’s newest sister affiliate, Leapfrog Landcare offers a safer, more environmentally friendly approach. Leapfrog Landcare believes strongly in sustainability and supporting your local community. The majority of the products we use are produced locally and are organic. Like you, we would rather have our family hanging out on a chemical free lawn. Leapfrog Landcare is pleased to provide Compost Tea treatments, the best natural soil amendment on the planet for our local soils.

Compost

Composting offers the obvious benefits of resource efficiency and creating a useful product from organic waste that would otherwise have been landfilled. Compost is a soil amendment that can be incorporated into garden soil to help it retain moisture and nutrients. It improves the texture of problem soils and encourages the growth of microorganisms that maintain plant and soil health. And perhaps best of all, it’s a free and easy way to dispose of organic waste, which decreases trash pickups and landfill usage.

Simply bring in any size RubberMaid container and lid, and we'll help your child drill the proper drainage holes and personalize the outside of their bins, as well as provide the soil and newspapers needed to get started.

Whether you are looking for design ideas, doing a bit of party planning, or browsing for tonight's dinner menu, Pinterest has literally thousands of ideas at the touch of a fingertip. We've pulled together a few of our favorite projects to share with you this week. So we hope you will mark your calendars and join us as we kick off our 2013 Winter Workshop series with a special Pinterest Party Workshop.

Pinterest Party Workshop- Wine Bottle Terrariums

Thursday February 7th

6pm - 8pm

Fee: $25 Pre-registration is required

Join us Thursday, Feb. 7th from 6pm 'til 8pm for our Pinterest Party Workshop.  We will be making terrariums out of wine bottles like the one pictured above.  Your $25 class fee includes all you need to take home this re-purposed bottle to add a little sunshine in your winter decor.

Pinterest Party Workshop Add-On Project- Wine Glass Terrarium and/or Sedum Cork Magnets

Additional Fee: $15 each Add-On

And if you are feeling even more creative, we will also be making "wine glass" terrariums and sedum cork magnets (see picture above).  You can add one wine glass and/or 5 cork gardens for an additional $15 each.

This past week, we received a brand new shipment of "baby plants", perfect for creating miniature gardens and terrariums, like the wine bottle terrarium we'll be completing in class. Choose from your favorites during our workshop, and perhaps you'll want to take a few home with you, as well.

We hope to see you all this Thursday evening for our Pinterest Party. Registration is open, so stop by the shop or give us a call. Please let the girls know if you are doing an "add-on" so we can be sure to have plenty of supplies. And of course we will be serving wine and other beverages as well as little nibbles, too. Can't wait to see you all!

Small Business Saturday

Mark your calendars for a very special event this Saturday, November 24th.  Between Black Friday and Cyber Monday is a day dedicated to supporting small businesses nationwide. Last year, over one hundred million people came together to Shop Small in their communities on Small Business Saturday.

This year marks the third annual Small Business Saturday, sponsored by American Express. Small Business Saturday is a day dedicated to supporting small businesses on one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year. And we could not be more excited! Not only are we a small independent business our self, but Garden Supply Company is also proud to support many small businesses with the beautiful products we provide to you. From the freshest plant materials we bring in from small local growers, to the hand-crafted and one-of-a-kind gifts and home decor from craftsmen and artisans across the country that fill our Greenhouse, we strongly believe in building a strong community by keeping things Small.

Shop Small and Get $25 Back

American Express wants to help you make a difference. Get a one-time $25 statement credit when you register an eligible American Express Card and use that card for a purchase of $25 or more at a small business on November 24th. Visit the American Express Small Business Saturday website to find out more and get your card registered to take advantage of this special offer.

Why Shop Small?

So what’s the advantage to shopping Small? Besides supporting your friends and neighbors, keeping your money circulating within your own community has multiple benefits that affect us all. According to statistics on the 3/50 Project website, for every $100 spent in locally owned independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures. If you spend that in a nation chain, only $43 stays here. Spend it online and nothing comes home. That's money that goes to your local fire department, police and neighbors.

So if you head out shopping this Saturday, we hope you will think of us, along with all the other fabulous small businesses in our community. Pledge to shop Small on November 24. If millions of Americans shop Small, it will be huge.
