Please join us for our First Annual Pink Garden Party, a premier event hosted by Garden Supply Co. to raise awareness and resources for Susan G. Komen for the Cure N.C. Triangle Affiliate. It is sure to be a great evening in the garden and a great way to give to our local Komen Affiliate who is currently serving 13 counties in N.C. (and are about to add 7 more under-served counties to our east)  some extra funds for more grants.

We will be wined and dined by our favorite Chef Mario, live music by Paco Band, and a Silent Auction filled with such great donations from local merchants you are sure to want to bid.  In addition, Deb will be raffling her Mini-Cooper this night! (There are only 100 tickets available at $150 each. *)

We invite you to bring friends and consider sponsoring a table which comes with extra perks like champagne for the table, a framed photograph of your group, a private hospitality tent, and recognition during the evening.

Family Fun Day at Garden Supply Co.

Family Fun Day- a Fundraiser for 13 Families Affected by the Recent TornadoJoin us this Saturday for free hot dogs, lemonade, and face-painting from our favorite painter, Shannon Carver. There will also be a bake sale with goodies lovingly donated by many friends and a raffle of a new IPOD Nano and BMX bike generously donated by Meghan Ramsey.

The recent tornado is a blip on most of our "radars" considering current events of late, but the Martin Middle School (where Garden Supply Co. owners' son Bobby goes to school) has 13 families who literally lost EVERYTHING during the storm.

So come out and enjoy the day with us as we host a fundraiser for these families. Students and parents from Martin Middle and Briarcliff Elementary Schools will be on hand to serve you and Shannon has generously donated her time and "tips" as she transform your child's face to whatever they want to be!

Shannon will start painting faces at 11:00 until 3:00, and the kids will start  cooking at 11:00 as well.

We were lucky, and while the food and face-painting is free, let's "tip" big to the kids who thought of this idea and encourage their spirit of helping others.

Also, we are celebrating North Carolina's rich history in farming Saturday.  We will be at the Second Annual Herbfest at the Page-Walker Arts & History Center as well as hosting a local farmer at the store sharing the history of tobacco farming.  It's a wonderfully informing presentation on what it was to farm tobacco and how it supported so much of our economy in this state.

We are sponsoring a contest to find the "Best Farmer". There will be one first place winner of a $300 gift certificate and two $100 runner-ups, details are at the garden center. Both events are a great opportunity to share in our heritage as North Carolinians, even if you are "transplant" like me!

The Komen Race for the Cure is just around the corner, and we at Garden Supply Company are ready to help in the battle against breast cancer. To that aim, we have launched our Gardener's for the Cure team for the second year, and we hope that you will join us in the fight.

This year is the 15th annual Komen NC Triangle Race and we have taken the 15th Anniversary Challenge to raise even more money to support our community and end Breast Cancer forever.  Last year, our team raised over $12,000 and this year we are asking you to really stretch to meet our goal.  With challenge comes rewards...

When you join our team, you will receive our much loved t-shirt (in a different color, of course!  Survivors will get one in pink), and an exclusive invitation to join us at our team party in the garden in October.

Make the additional $25.00 donation to allow access for underserved women in our area to screenings and mobile mammography, and receive our team 12% discount card for Garden Supply Co. to use on any purchase through the calendar year.

Be the one to recruit the most team members and you'll win a $500.00 Gift Certificate to Garden Supply.

Last, but not least, be the team member to raise the most money individually and we will give you 2 airline tickets anywhere in the U.S.!

Are you up to the challenge?  Then sign up and get started!  You can make a donation to our team by clicking on the "Donate" button near the thermometer on our Gardener's for the Cure page or if you would like to make your gift to one of the team members please click on their name at the bottom of the page.

Advocates for Health in Action's Garden Tool Drive

Advocates for Health in Action (AHA), a non-profit group based in Raleigh, has made it their mission to help Triangle area residents live a better lifestyle through healthy eating and physical activity. In the month of March, AHA will be hosting several Garden Tool Drives to help community gardens in need, and they are looking for donations. If you have unwanted tools, sitting neglected in the corner of your garage, they could really use your help. Tools in good working order may be donated during one of three AHA drives.

Garden Tool Drive Dates:

Saturday, March 5 at AHA’s Dig In at Marbles Kids Museum in Raleigh, 8:30 am-12 pm.

Tuesday, March 15 at the Alexander Family YMCA at 1603 Hillsborough St. in Raleigh in the WakeMed Rehabilitation office, 11 am-1 pm.

Monday, March 21 outside the main entrance of WakeMed Cary, 1900 Kildaire Farm Rd., Cary, 11 am-1 pm.

AHA will gladly accept wheel barrows, hoes, shovels, pick axes, and other gardening tools in good working order. These tools will be distributed to local community gardens in need.

Community gardening is becoming increasingly popular as more people recognize the benefits of healthy eating and physical activity. Community gardens increase access to fresh fruits and vegetables for many, and promotes a sense of community involvement and awareness of where our food comes from. Unfortunately, one of the biggest hurdles community gardeners face is funding for all the supplies needed to maintain the gardens.

So if you have tools to spare, if you love gardening and community, join the AHA Garden Tool Drive. For more information, please visit the Advocate for Health in Action website.

Fall Pumpkin Projects

Cary, NC The air is turning cooler and the leaves are starting to turn. Halloween is right around the corner. Time to break out the fall decor, spruce up your front porches with glorious potted mums, and add a few seasonal touches with pumpkins and gourds.

One of my absolute favorite things to do this time of year is dress up my front entryway for autumn. Just a few simple and inexpensive accents can really make a bold and welcoming statement. For my front steps, I placed a potted mum and a few pumpkins next to my metal jack-o-lanterns, and in just a few minutes, created a sweet Halloween scene. After Halloween is over, I can simply remove the metal decor, and the rest will be perfect next month as Thanksgiving approaches.

More stacked pumpkins and gourds add a festive flair to my wooden bench. So simple. And with the wonderful selection of pumpkins at Garden Supply Co., you'll have fun choosing. We've got pumpkins and gourds in all shapes and sizes and colors, too.

Garden Supply Company

Garden Supply Company

If you're looking for some creative ideas for decorating with gourds, here are a few fun projects I tried this year.

I can't decide if this looks more like a little old farmer lady or a robot, but either way, this project was fun, inexpensive, and easy to create. And with all the different pumpkins to choose from, think of all the characters you could make. Drill holes in your stacked pumpkins and attach them using bamboo skewers found in the grocery store. Add a couple of funky gourds for arms, and you are done.

And speaking of funky gourds, here's another project to try, inspired by Martha.

More gourds, more drilled holes and bamboo skewers. A little bit of carving or scraping to mark the shell. Simple. These are probably the only snails I won't mind seeing in my garden this year.

And what fun it was coming up with combinations of snails to try out. With our selection of gourds, the possibilities are endless.

I hope I've inspired you to try out a few fall decorating ideas. And don't forget to join us this Saturday, October 23rd from 10-3 for our Pumpkin Pickin'. Browse our fabulous pumpkin patch while enjoying hot dogs, cotton candy, and a few surprises for the kids. And don't forget your cameras!

We'll see you then!

Pumpkin Pickin'

Cary, NC Mark your calendars for next Saturday, October 23rd from 10-3, and join us at Garden Supply Company for our fun and festive Pumpkin Pickin'. We'll have hot  dogs and cotton candy to munch on, a few special treats for the kids, plus lots of pumpkins and gourds to chose from in our pumpkin patch.

We've got pumpkins and gourds in every shape, color, and size, just perfect for carving and for decorating your porches and homes this season. And speaking of carving, why not enter our Facebook Pumpkin Carving Contest? You could win a $250 gift certificate to the garden center, or perhaps one of three $100 gift certificates. The contest is open to all age groups, and YOUR friends and family will vote for you. Pick up all the entry rules at the front registers.

We look forward to seeing you all next Saturday! And don't forget your cameras. You'll not want to miss getting a family shot in one of our favorite photo spots.

Weeping Cherries: Mahogany bark Snow Fountain Cherry

Weeping cherry trees must be included in any Top 10 list of weeping trees, since they are spectacular blooming specimens for the spring landscape. Snow Fountains blooms best in full sun and well-drained soil. A slow-growing ornamental, the branches of this weeping cherry cascade right down to the ground.

Winter Honeysuckle:

Winter honeysuckle is a delightful shrub for extending the seasons: its winter flowers bring spring to the garden several months early while, at the other end of the year, its foliage lasts well into winter.

Pussy Willows:

Pussy Willows are a pure treat for spring-starved eyes. Who doesn't love to  prune off a few branches studded with furry pussy willow to be brought indoors and honored as spring's earliest harbingers?

And if you're looking for a true showpiece for the winter landscape, check out these amazing Harry Lauder's Walking Sticks.  Often referred to by their common names, corkscrew filbert and contorted hazelnut, these flowering shrubs make showy ornamentals prized for their twisted, architectural forms.

These are just a small sampling of what's in store for you down at Garden Supply.  You truly have to see it to believe it!  Stop by and pay us a visit and get in on our special 15% off all trees and shrubs sale beginning Saturday.  Keep your eyes out for pink flamingos around the nursery, too.  They will be marking other sales that are changing daily.

Thanks for stopping by everyone!  Hope to see you all soon!

The Countdown Begins

Good morning everyone!  Happy Monday!  Here's wishing you a great beginning to a new week.  And it's a very exciting week at Garden Supply.  Our annual Spring Garden Party begins in just 6 days, on Saturday  March 13th at 10 a.m.  Be sure and mark your calendars because you guys are not going to want to miss this!  We can't wait to see you there. And in the mean time, we have tons going on down at the garden center.  New plants are arriving daily and the Greenhouse is full to bursting with beautiful spring and Easter decor.  Take a look at this glorious shipment of Variegated Winter Daphne that has just come in.

This lovely plant is noted for its fragrance, which carries long distances and can often be smelled before you even see the plant in early spring.  The flower buds are purple and as they open will reveal an almost white center which is very beautiful.

It is an evergreen, so will keep its leaves year-round.  The leaves are decorative, as well, in dark green with white edges.  It is very dense and has a rounded form that will grow from 2 to 4 feet tall and about 2 to 4 feet wide.  This particular shrub is said to be one of the best of its kind.  With its smaller size it would work well around patios or in a small yard.  It is hardy to zones 6 to 9.  If you like fragrance, this would fit the bill!

If you're looking for a burst of color and greenery, we've got you covered.  The Greenhouse is filled with a wide array of flowers and plants that are sure to please.  We've got pansies, orchids, begonias, tulips, hyacinths, hydrangeas, cyclamens, ranunculus, and primroses in full bloom.  It is absolutely magical in here.

While you're in the Greenhouse, be sure to check out our collectible Penny McAllister figurines.  They are guaranteed to bring a spring smile to these last lingering days of winter.

Penny McAllister's whimsical and sweet collections bring new charm to folk art.  The sewing bug bit Penny at the tender age of 5.  Nearly 50 years later, the former elementary school librarian has woven her passion for folk art into a dream occupation, making paper mache creations full of wit and whimsy.

"The chip on my nose, the worn paint on my clothes...they're all supposed to be there! I was designed this way, lovingly aged" by Penny McAllister

As always, there is more to see and do at Garden Supply.  Stop by and pay us a visit!  We'd love to see you!  And be sure to check back here soon for more snippets from the garden.
