Calcium from lobster improves soil for tomatoes.

Calcium from lobster improves soil for tomatoes.

Choose an area with full (at least six hours each day of direct) sun. Plant in containers or a raised garden bed. Amend existing soil or create your new planting medium with a mixture of our favorite Coast of Maine (COM) soils and amendments. Certified Organic, COM bagged soils and amendments enhance existing soils or create robust new compounds, especially for your pizza garden! Read why tomatoes love lobster and better understand calcium as an important nutrient your tomato plants need!

Wear gloves and mix amendments together evenly. Space your plants according to each variety’s stick tag. For instance, most tomato plants need 2-3’ between plants. Some smaller herbs tolerate closer growing conditions. Don’t be afraid to take your new plants out of their old containers. Draw perimeters around each herb or veggie in the soil indicating space between larger and smaller plants.

Once your garden looks laid out the way you want, dig small holes for each root ball. Remember to add Espoma Bio-Tone to the bottom of each planting hole where the new roots meet the soil. Create a slight mound around your plant. Make sure your plant’s stem stands up straight. Gently water each new plant. Check your plants every morning and allow your plants 1-2 cubic inches of water per foot of plant height per week. Read why container plants need more water than garden beds and check your container plants twice a day throughout the hotter months.

Observe, measure and make predictions about your growing plants! Provide netting or other protection from critters. Pest problem? Use an organic solution like Neem oil or Insecticidal Soap. In 6-8 weeks, dress your garden soil with Espoma Tomato-Tone organic granular fertilizer for a mid-season boost. Prune unwanted growth from crowded limbs and pick your produce right away!
