Purple Cabbage Challenge

Looking for a fun way to incorporate gardening, cooking and stem?!

Try this home science activity with kids of all ages and itroduce the concept of acids and bases. Here’s the easy Purple Cabbage Challenge recipe:

  • water

  • purple/red cabbage

  • white vinegar

  • baking soda

1. Boil one cup of cabbage in two cups of water. Invite your at-home-STEM-chef to WATCH! Let the cabbage water cool and strain into a large clear container.

2. Then, carefully add one Tablespoon of white vinegar into the cabbage water. What happens? Add a little more and keep watching the changes.

3. Next, stir one Tablespoon of baking soda into the mixture. What reactions occur? Continue to add more and see what happens!

You just changed the PH of different solutions! Gardener? Chef? Scientist? It’s all up to you!
