Easy does it: Air plant care

The dog days are here. In this heat, gardening is hard work at this point in the year. Trust us, we know it! So how about we talk about something stress-free and easy-going? Let's beat the heat, go inside and talk about easy care for a second.

When it comes to indoor plants, air plants are some of the easiest to care for out of the many houseplants we carry. So how do we care for them? It's simple!

Air Plant Care

Light. Air plants are called air plants because they don't need soil, but they do still need light. While artificial light will suffice, indirect sunlight from a window is best. When selecting a place for your new air plant, choose a place close to a window if possible.

Water. Throw your watering can to the side. Air plants require a different type of watering method than the one you're probably used to. Once a week, your air plants will need a bath. Grab a kitchen bowl from the cabinet, fill it with water and submerge your plants underwater, bottoms up. Let the plants soak for about 10-20 minutes. After the bath, gently dry any excess water from the bottom of your plants to avoid rot. If you keep your air plants in a terrarium or semi-enclosed glass globe, allow them to dry on a towel for a few hours so that there's no excess moisture within the container before putting them back in their places.

Fertilize. For full and green air plants, use bromeliad or orchid fertilizer about once a month. These plants can be sensitive so be sure not to fertilize too often!
