Rabbit Resistant Plants

Rabbits are adorable until they bite off your favorite plants. So, stop rabbits from munching on your garden with these pretty, bunny resistant flower and plant picks.

The perennial plants listed below are resistant or considered the second or third choice when dining on plant material. A rule of thumb is that most plants with fuzzy leaves, a strong odor + a strap leaf or a needle + drought tolerant natives fall into the resistant list. Below are the plants that resist both Rabbits & Deer’s.

Allium (Ornamental Onion)

Onion may be a big part of the human diet, but the flavor is a turn off for the grazers. They'll only touch this plant as a last resort. The flowers, however, attract pollinators.

This is a plant that most rabbits will not touch unless they need the nutrition. They tend to grow in zones three through nine, and the blooms are different shades of purple. They prefer full sun and well-draining soil to grow.

Astilbe

This is a perennial that has a bad taste for rabbits and deer’s, so they are not likely to bother it. That means you get to enjoy the flowers of this versatile (Sun or shade) perennial + it prefers slightly acidic soil. In general, it is mostly found in zones three through eight.

Ferns

Ferns as a group are often left alone by critters. It's a perfect deer and rabbit resistant option for shade. They are elegant foliage plants that capture the eye without the aid of flowers.

They are shade-loving are generally considered deer resistant + make excellent additions to the woodland or shade garden. There are many species of ferns in the world, only a few of which can survive with relatively little water.

Geraniums

Perennial geraniums are also called as Hardy Geraniums. Both perennial geraniums and Pelargoniums (annual geraniums) are extremely pest resistant. Not to be confused with the red annual Geraniums (Pelargonium), the foliage on Geraniums have a slight scent that smells nice to us but not to deer and rabbits.

Iris

When you're walking by some Iris, you may enjoy that pleasant sweet scent coming from the flowers. That same scent is what drives the critters away + it keeps the rabbits & deer at bay.

This lovely smelling plant typically has purple, blue, pink, yellow, or white blooms. It grows best in full to partial sun and well-drained soil.

Lavender

Lavender is a great smelling plant, but its strong scent scares away deer and rabbits. They require well-drained soil + full sun to grow but not a lot of water. Blooms occur in the summer in zones five through nine. Lavender is also great for attracting butterflies, so it may be a welcome addition to your garden.

Salvia

If you rip a Salvia leaf and put it to your nose, you'll notice a minty scent. Not surprising, Salvia belong to the mint family. That same strong scent that seems pleasant to you keeps the critters away.

Yucca (Adam's Needle)

The flowers may not be rabbit or deer resistant, but the foliage is. Most people like to enjoy this as a foliage interest in their garden anyway. Yucca plant is widely popular as drought tolerant evergreen garden perennial with many varieties. They prefer full sun to part sun with well-drained soil.
