Teacher’s pet: Why air plants make the best gift

Those sweet summer nights are coming to a close, and school is back in session! Do you have kids who’ve just gone back to school for the year? If so, you might consider getting a little back-to-school gift for their new teacher… for all he or she is about to endure with a class full of kids this year! We think air plants make such great gifts for anyone—green thumb or not! These beauties are so unique and nearly impossible to kill. You can’t go wrong!

There are more than 650 types of air plants that can be found in an entire rainbow of colors, so it’s easy to find one (or a few) that will look great in your space or in a classroom. Air plants are perfect to sit on a teacher’s desk, or to be placed in a glass terrarium hanging on display!

Because they’re so easy to take care of, air plants are perfect for a classroom or office where you can leave them unattended for extended periods of time. If you go on vacation or if school is on break, you won’t have to worry about them not surviving. Air plants should be watered once a week, but some are happy with once every two weeks. Typically, air plants with more silver foliage are slightly more drought tolerant. Greener air plants dry out a bit faster. When you do water your air plant, rinse it lightly in the sink and then leave it in there overnight to drain.

These incredible plants are epiphytes, meaning they thrive without soil or dirt, so they won’t make a mess if knocked over—this natural childproofing makes air plants great for classrooms!

Because they aren’t planted in soil, being placed in direct sunlight might cause your air plants to dry out. They do best in bright light indoors or in partial shade outdoors. Being inside with the heat on during the winter can also cause air plants to dry out, so they grow best away from vents. They love great air circulation! If you do notice your air plant drying out, you can place them in a bowl of water for a few hours to let them rehydrate! You can also give them a light misting to keep them happy!
