Not your mother's hydrangeas!

Native to Asia, North America and South America, hydrangeas have become a sweet Southern staple that brings a breath of fresh air to any garden. The widest variety of species can be found in China, Japan and Korea. Not only do these beautiful blooms exist in almost every color, but they also come packed with history + symbolism. Keep reading to find out more about the hydrangea’s history!

Many believe that the hydrangea originated in Japan, where it holds the most significance. It’s said that long ago a Japanese emperor neglected the woman he loved, putting his work first. In turn, he gave hydrangeas to his love’s family as a token of his apology. Hydrangeas are now often associated with sincere emotion and gratitude in Japan.

In Europe, however, hydrangeas hold an entirely different meaning. It wasn’t until a North American colonist brought the plant back to England toward the mid-1700s that they were seen in Europe. There, these blossoming beauties are believed to signify arrogance or boastfulness.

The hydrangea’s meaning also lies within their color. Pink hydrangeas symbolize love + sincerity. Blue signify apology or regret. White can be associated with purity + grace, but also with arrogance. Purple hydrangeas symbolize a sincere desire to understand, as well as wealth + abundance. With so many different meanings, it’s a good thing we can change our hydrangea’s color ourselves! These beauties have definitely evolved over the years!
