Sunshine + citrus: How to care for your lemon tree

There’s nothing quite like enjoying fresh fruit in the heat of the summer, and when the fruit is straight from your garden it tastes that much better! Lemon trees are the perfect plant for brightening up your garden and bearing delicious goodies that can be added to almost any dish. So what are the secrets to care for your lemon tree?

Sunshine and citrus go hand-in-hand. Your lemon tree will love a bright sunny day! Plant your tree on the south-facing side of your home for full sunlight. It will want at least eight hours of sun a day, but definitely no less than six. Sunshine will help your tree flower, eventually producing delicious fruit!

Let them savor the heat. Citrus trees in general are pretty sensitive to cold weather, and lemon trees are even more so. If you do decide to plant your tree in the garden, keeping it near the house to avoid cold wind will help immensely.

When winter rolls around, move your lemon tree to a container and bring it indoors. Be aware of any vents you have nearby—while these trees love warmth, hot air blowing directly on them will dry out their leaves. You might even mist them with a spray bottle for some humidity! If your tree is near a window, give it a quarter rotation every few weeks so it can get sun from all directions.

Drink up! For lemon trees, a deep watering is typically needed once a week or every two weeks. Planting your tree with mulch will help retain some of the water so it doesn’t dry out too quickly. When your soil is partially dry, another deep watering is needed.
