The Venus Flytrap State

Carnivorous Plants in North Carolina

Did you know— Carnivorous plants grow native to a select geographical region in North Carolina? Venus Flytraps, Pitcher Plants, Sundews and several other carnivorous plant varieties grow native to North Carolina. In fact, The Nature Conservancy counts “an astounding 36 [out of 66 species]” live in North Carolina!

The Coastal Plain area (within an approximate 75-mile radius around Wilmington) provides the sandy, low-mineral soils essential for carnivorous plant growth, according to NCPedia.org. These plants tolerate direct sunlight and boggy soil. Carnivorous plants may be cultivated all over the world but there’s few places to see them in their native habitat except right here in our home state! The Venus Flytrap even hails as our Official State Carnivorous Plant.

Carnivorous plants consume their prey in a variety of ways. Carnivorous plants with bright colors and tall, dainty flowers easily attract unsuspecting pests. Pitcher Plants catch water and lure bugs in for a tragic sip. Flytraps close their tiny, shiny plant jaws around curious critters. Sticky Sundews entice insects with only to get stuck in a natural anesthetic. Explore some amazing carnivorous plants in this series by the N.C. Cooperative Extension in Craven County, NC.
